WATCH: Bristol proves that #transisbeautiful

By Bristol24/7  Wednesday Jan 3, 2018

A fashion show with a difference has taken place in To The Moon on Old Market, showcasing the unique clothing designs of Jenna  Hartmann. Her clothing label, Baal, is the first in the world to use a sizing system that works with male measurements but for feminine clothing in flattering shapes.

Jenna’s designs were worn by transgender models at Trans Pride South West fashion show at the event in November 2017, and Masters student Aphra Evans, studying documentary production at UWE, captured the event in this short film.

“I spotted a sign for Trans Pride South West fashion show in the window of To The Moon on Old Market,” explains Aphra. “I thought it sounded like such a great, celebratory event and decided to get in touch with the organisers to see if I could make a short film about it.

“That was how I got talking to Jenna Hartmann, the creator of the fashion label Baal. She was not able to design fashion for trans people at fashion school because, well, it’s a very binary world we live in. She was only allowed to do either womenswear or menswear. She had to wait until her Bachelor’s degree before she was allowed to start designing clothes for trans women, where she designed her unique measurement system for trans women.

“She is the only fashion designer doing what she does, and I thought her work sounded so important, like it should have already happened. Problems with clothing sizes is probably not something many cisgender people think about.”

On capturing the event, Aphra described is as “a lovely, intimate, celebratory event, and a chance for everyone to look and feel great”.
