Watch: Bristol24/7 Presents panel discussion

By Ellie Pipe  Thursday Oct 1, 2020

Breaking down the barriers to inclusivity within Bristol’s creative industries was a key theme during a live panel discussion.

The inaugural Bristol24/7 Presents event brought together people at different stages of their career from organisations across the city to reflect on their own experiences and outline some of the things that need to change to ensure there are genuine opportunities for all, regardless of background or circumstances.

Panellists included Laila Mckenzie, the founder of music events business Parallel Dimensions, Mel Rodrigues, the director of TedxBristol and founder of talent agency Gritty Talent, Mo Ali, a philosopher, poet and spoken word artist, and Neil Maggs, a journalist, broadcaster and filmmaker who is currently hosting a podcast series Bristol Unpacked.

is needed now More than ever
Keep our city's journalism independent.

A lack of diversity within organisations – particularly at management level – struggles to access funding, insecure employment prospects, unpaid work and the failure of many companies to bridge the gaps to reach underrepresented talent were all highlighted.

Watch people from across different creative organisations in the city give their views on some of the challenges faced and what needs to change:

In July 2020, Bristol24/7 launched a community reporters project to help train a team of budding journalists to cover hyper-local news in areas of the city in which they live, with full support and training.

This is part of a drive to make the Bristol24/7 platform more inclusive and ensure stories are getting told from areas of the city that might otherwise be underrepresented in mainstream media.

Bristol24/7 is also part of the Creative Workforce for the Future scheme and currently has talented photographer Qezz Gill on a paid internship. Look out for one of Qezz’s photos on the front cover of the October magazine.

But there is still much more work to do and the event sought to highlight what needs to change and the opportunities possible through taking a collaborative approach.

For the final 15 minutes of the event, Chané from boomsatsuma gave a live tutorial on how to make a great video.
