Weight of opposition against proposed 24-hour gym
More than a dozen objections have been received about plans to turn a former nightclub on Whiteladies Road into a 24-hour gym.
Snap Fitness – who already have a gym in Abbey Wood Retail Park – hope to open a new gym on the site of what was most recently Dorma and was previously Platform One, above Clifton Down railway station.
Founded in 2003 in the USA, Snap Fitness currently has more than 2,000 gyms worldwide including USA, Canada, Mexico, India, Australia and New Zealand.
is needed now More than ever
But their expansion into Clifton could prove tricky, with local residents particularly unhappy about the proposal for the gym to be open 24 hours a day.
Dr Jill White of Hampton Park & Cotham Hill Community Group drew attention to “the appalling effects of such 24/7 gyms on nearby residential property”.
Clifton Down councillor Carla Denyer’s concerns include noise pollution from music, disruption from clients coming and going, and no off-road parking available overnight.
In his objection to the plans, local resident Dave Hall said: “This is a joke! 24 hour access and heavy banging of weights, we have enough gyms in the area why put other small gyms that have been in the area for years out of business, surely a better use of the facility could be used.”
