Well-used path to remain closed

By Martin Booth  Thursday Jan 16, 2025

A path connecting the city centre with Ashton Court will now be closed for more than two months more than first planned.

The path is part of route 33 of the National Cycle Network, also known as Festival Way.

While building work takes place for the City Gateway development on a former railway depot, a section of the path has been closed since May with the diversion route called “a fiasco” by walkers and cyclists.

In a statement, Vistry Group (formerly Bovis Homes) said: “We consulted with Bristol City Council, Sustrans and Hotwells & District Allotment Association to minimise the disruption, and a diversion has been put in place to ensure cyclists and pedestrians can continue their journey safely.

“The cycle route was due to reopen on 28th January 2025, however works to remove the substation, which are outside of our control, have been delayed and the cycle route will now reopen on Monday 31st March.

“We apologise for this delay and are working as hard as possible to reopen the route ahead of this date.”
