‘Women are at the heart of Bristol’s night life community’
At least 97 per cent of women have experienced sexual harassment, a statistic Carly Heath is working hard to change.
“That’s just a really ridiculous statistic for us to have to hold as a city,” says Bristol’s nighttime economy advisor, speaking to Bristol24/7 at the launch of the Women’s Safety Charter.
“When we spoke to the men, over half of them couldn’t even name what sexual harassment was so there’s a bit of work to be done in terms of redressing the balance.”
is needed now More than ever
Appointed into the new role in March last year, Carly is tasked with helping to support the recovery of a sector that she calls “the beating heart of Bristol’s culture”.
As part of this work, she commissioned the survey and is leading a citywide approach to tackling sexual harassment and making places after dark safe, inclusive and welcoming for all.
“Women should be able to experience the city after dark and not feel like they’re threatened and there’s work to be done to bring people along on that journey and create a city of allies,” continues Carly, adding: “If it’s unwanted, it’s not OK.”
Carly is going to be a panellist at the Bristol24/7 Presents: Celebrating Women in the Nighttime Economy event, hosted in partnership with Bristol Nights at Lost Horizon.
The nighttime economy advisor will take part in a discussion with Emma Harvey, the CEO of Trinity, Laura Lewis Paul of Saffron, Linda Devo the co-founder of Kiki Bristol, AKA DJ Devolicious from Booty Bass, and Ola Poroslo, the founder and director of Phat Bristol.
The aim is to celebrate women and non binary people within Bristol’s night life scene and tackle some of the challenges faced. Phat is also hosting CROTCH Queer House Party at Lost Horizon straight after the Bristol24/7 Presents event.
Reflecting on what is great about Bristol’s night life, Carly adds: “What I think is so great is that when you look around the city, most of the major venues are run by women. We are not invisible within this community, we are there are we are right at the heart of it and there are so many reasons to celebrate the great work we do in the city.
“We’ve got such a solid community, we’re such a friendly city – we create amazing music scenes, amazing moments and amazing opportunities to share joy with your friends.”
