Work begins on more than 100 homes across Bristol

By Stella Rogers  Thursday Dec 5, 2024

Construction work on new housing projects has started on several sites across the city, including at a former community centre, police station and cinema.

The building sites include the former Cameron Centre in Lockleaze, and Leinster Avenue and the old cinema on Filwood Broadway in Knowle West.

To mark the start of construction, a group of cross-party councillors visited the Lockleaze site.

Stepnell have been contracted to develop the homes at the Cameron Centre site

Green councillor Barry Parsons, chair of the homes and housing delivery committee, said: “I am delighted that our new build programme is continuing at pace.

“We are committed to increasing the number of well-built, affordable homes in Bristol so that many
more people will have a comfortable, energy efficient place they can call home.

“We also need to make sure that any homes we build compliment the local area and enable people to become part of the local community.

“Every property we build is important, and we are doing everything we can to accelerate our building programme working within the budget constraints facing the council.”

When plans first emerged for the project, community organisations expressed concerns over a lack of a guarantee for a community space.

However, Parsons has confirmed the new development will have “a new purpose build community space” that will be “bigger than the old one”.

Alternative spaces have been provided for all activities that took place in the old community centre so they can continue until the construction concludes in 2026.

Lockleaze is one area of Bristol benefitting from a number of new homes

The construction means the city will soon have more than 100 new council and shared ownership homes.

Parsons explained that the construction had been funded “through a range of different sources”.

He said: “It’s quite a complex picture and we’re always doing everything that we can to maximise what we can do with the resources that we’ve got available.”

Parsons added: “We also know that we cannot meet affordable housing needs alone, and we are working with registered provider partners and other organisations across the city to deliver much needed affordable homes for Bristol.”

The housing delivery team have recently completed building 57 homes in Lawrence Weston and 28 in Horfield, with an additional seven construction sites currently on track to deliver 130 new council homes.

Work on all three sites is due to be completed by spring 2026.
