Kate Hartoch is co-director of the biennial Circus City festival, returning to Bristol from October 12-29. Kate is a freelance producer specialising in working with circus performance. Her whose work includes commissioning new circus and outdoor art at Glastonbury Festival.
Here are Kate’s top-five Bristol favourites:
Kebele Community Co-Op
is needed now More than ever
“Kebele has been going for 22 years now, first as a squat and then as a co-operative owned space for development of anarchist and radical ideas and activities, community campaigns, and international solidarity. I used to live around the corner. It’s a rare and important space.”
Circomedia

“Twelve years ago I held a showcase at this converted church in St Paul’s which was a turning point in my career. I love programming circus shows into this gorgeous space. The rigging at Circomedia is so versatile and the team are great to work with. I can’t wait to bring our Circus City programme there this year.”
Hengrove Park
“Apparently Hengrove Park is the biggest free play park in the south of England. It’s fun for big and little kids with its Mad Max Beyond Thunderdrome-style climbing kit and skate park. It’s perfect for a run-around after a trip to the cinema.”
The Lido
“For me this is the next best thing to wild swimming. You don’t get the nature at The Lido but you get a steam and a soak instead. It’s a proper treat and the food’s not bad either. They’re just about to open a new one in Reading, Thames Lido, which looks pretty lush too.”
Bristol Family Cycling Centre
“I’ve just discovered this place that opened last year on the former Whitchurch athletics track. Bristol Family Cycling Centre has got a smooth track, top quality bikes and a lovely crew. It provides an opportunity to build your confidence while cycling in a safe environment. I don’t get to cycle as much as I used to. I miss it and want my kids to learn to love it too.”
