My Bristol Favourites: Phillip Charles
Dr Phillip Charles is a psychiatrist and trustee with Changes Bristol, a charity that has been running mental health peer support meetings for adults across the city since 2004. As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, he spoke out about the need to demystify mental health issues, which affect one in four people, beat the stigma and encourage people to seek support.
Here are Phillip’s top-five Bristol favourites:
Arnolfini
is needed now More than ever
“The Arnolfini is located in a fantastic waterside location and is packed with contemporary art. The participation activities are a good balance of fun things, like making your own badge, and opportunities to broaden your perspectives through art that challenges social norms. It’s a registered charity and the exhibition spaces are free.”
Bristol Old Vic

“I’ve spent many enjoyable hours watching plays at Bristol Old Vic. They have an eclectic mix, from contemporary Shakespearean productions, to original scripts. It’s the longest continuously-running theatre in the UK and a great way to spend an evening with friends.”
The Bag of Nails

“I consider myself more a dog person, but the Bag of Nails at the bottom of Jacob’s Wells Road in Hotwells has some of the friendliest and oddly lethargic cats I’ve ever seen. If you’re a fan of kittens then it makes for an enjoyable trip to the pub.”
The Grain Barge
“In a stunning location on the harbourside, the Grain Barge hosts a diverse array of musicians and comedians, and has very friendly staff. It has some tasty burgers to enjoy outdoors on the roof terrace overlooking the Floating Harbour.”
Street art in Stokes Croft
“The bohemian delights in what is informally known as Bristol’s cultural quarter are a real favourite of mine. There are lots of independent coffee shops, restaurants and some art galleries. I enjoy looking at the street art bringing vibrancy to the area, and making for an enjoyable stroll on a hot afternoon.”
