My Bristol Favourites: Betty Woolerton

By Bristol24/7  Saturday Dec 11, 2021

Betty Woolerton is Bristol24/7’s newest reporter, whose job it is to cover the news that matters across our city.

Betty, who lives in Hotwells, already has the unique distinction of attending a mayoral press conference from a stationery cupboard (the quietest room in the Bristol24/7 office).

These are Betty’s top-five Bristol favourites:

Eat a Pitta

“The amount of falafel-based eateries in Bristol is staggering, so haling Eat a Pitta as my favourite is a big statement. These Middle Eastern stalls and cafes are my go-to lunches, teas and even (occasional) breakfasts in Bristol. I have been buying their pittas since I was at school and would walk through Stokes Croft to visit their branch in Broadmead. Since they are cropping up all over Bristol now, these days I am lucky enough to be treated to hearty falafel wraps (with a tahini sauce that I could bathe in) a ten-minute walk away from where I live.”

Paradisco

Paradisco is a Nottingham-born club night that has made its way to Bristol, and its classic disco and funk tunes can normally be found ringing from the Crofters Rights in Stokes Croft once a month (where I will probably be too). Nothing beats an evening in this sweaty disco locker – a blur of Bristol Beer Factory pints and classic 80s bangers reminding Bristol that disco isn’t dead.”

The view from the mound

“Narroways Hill, better known as the mound, is one of my favourite spots in Bristol to take in a view. The walk to the summit can be gruelling, but the 360-degree outlook of the city makes it all worth it. Topped off with a trip down the hill to St Werburgh’s City Farm and then on to Better Food on Mina Road for a coffee makes for a delightful day out.”

Shelter, Clifton Village

Shelter is one of the most popular charity shops in Clifton Village – photo: Shelter

“It takes a lot for me to include Shelter on Regent Street as one of my Bristol favourites, as to me it’s one of Bristol’s best kept secrets. I have discovered my all-time greatest charity shop finds in this little shop, from a Harris Tweed blazer to a Burberry trench coat. I can only commend the lovely volunteers’ impeccable taste. ”

Pistachio gelato at Taste of Napoli

“For proper authentic, traditional Neapolitan food and coffee in the city centre, Taste of Napoli is – in my opinion – one of the most under-appreciated cafes in Bristol. Espressos are short and strong, vegan options are plentiful and the staff are spot-on. The cafe is is a wonderful blend of Britalians smoking cigarettes and Bristolians popping in after braving Primark. I personally am addicted to their cannolis and (vegan!) pistachio gelato, which you can buy by the tub.”
