“Given the expertise of baristas in Bristol, choosing a favourite cafe is tough. But New Cut, which coincidentally opened its doors on my birthday in 2021, has consistently provided a haven of friendly service, delicious vegan treats and exceptional coffee – I love that Timor-Leste! Run by the dynamic duo of Kate and Jack, this cafe between Wapping Wharf and the harbour has become my absolute go-to second office and a preferred meeting spot both for work and pleasure.

Aardman Animations

“A significant home for Slapstick Festival, Aardman Animations’ headquarters on Gas Ferry Road in Spike Island is a true gem in Bristol. These wonderful people have been our sponsors, supporters and partners since the festival began 20 years ago. The building itself is striking and exudes creativity, creating a rich cultural environment that adds to Bristol’s vibrant cultural scene.”

Bristol Beacon

“With the Beatles having graced its stage not once but twice, that would be enough for this choice but Bristol Beacon means so much more. Slapstick have hosted 22 events in the main hall and it’s a venue filled with cherished memories for me. From the unforgettable Elvis Costello and the Imposters gig in 2013, where my eight-year-old son danced onstage, chose his favourite song and then met him backstage, to the mesmerising Kraftwerk concert in 2017, the Beacon looms large in my consciousness as a magnificent and unforgettable venue.”

Arnos Vale Cemetery

“Living just two minutes’ walk from its entrance, Arnos Vale Cemetery offers a unique blend of nature, tranquillity and a chance to practise the stoic principle of ‘memento mori’ – reminding me to embrace each moment and appreciate the beauty in life. Restored in 2010, this centuries-old cemetery is spread across acres of woodland and offers a gentle start to our day, providing a calming transition from home to school during the weekday morning school run with my daughter, Oona.”

Acappella

“Wells Road in Totterdown holds a special place in my heart, thanks to Acappella cafe and pizzeria. Since 2007, this award-winning gem has been my preferred spot for indulging in fantastic pizza and delightful breakfasts. Tony and his exceptional team have skilfully adapted their offerings over the years and personally, I can’t get enough of eggs acappella and the veggie breakfast options.”
