My Bristol Favourites: Kristian Crews

By Martin Booth  Thursday Mar 5, 2020

Kristian Crews is the founder of restaurant, deli and shop, Spoke & Stringer, which now has two locations in Bristol: its original home on Brunel Quay opposite the SS Great Britain and a newly opened second site on Whiteladies Road.

These are his top-five Bristol favourites:

The Wave

Keep our city's journalism independent.

“An obvious out of town haunt to list is The Wave. An opportunity to surf 20 minutes from home and be guaranteed waves is a dream. I’m looking forward to trying out different types of wave size and power once released to the public. A pizza up there on the sidelines from Pizzarova (hopefully they return in the summer) with a cold beer watching perfect waves for an evening could possibly be paradise in Bristol.”

Goats on the Downs

Goats help to make room for rare wildflowers by eating invasive woody plants like scrub and bramble – photo by Jim Lampard / Bristol Nature Channel

“The Downs are great for fresh air and views as everyone knows. However, a few years back we stumbled across the goats! Finding them for the first time was astonishing. I couldn’t believe these guys were in the gully, not only are they amazing creatures but they are a key part of the conservation project. Visit, but be respectful and don’t let your dog in there!”

The Cottage

“Busy brunch weekends on the harbourside deserve a well-earned pint. The favourite in this department is the Cottage at Baltic Wharf. Sundowners on the steps by the water here on a Sunday are a weekend essential.”

Tyntesfield

“This is another recent discovery for us, which prompted National Trust membership. Tyntesfield is a Victorian gothic manor house and grounds on a crisp winter’s day is truly awe-inspiring.”

Murray May’s

“I have always been a fan of Ewan and Thecla’s food. From their early days working at Spoke & Stringer, watching their rise to street food glory with Murray May’s is an inspiration to all up and coming street food artists. The charcoal grill in their converted Mercedes ex-military Dutch ambulance is a piece of magic.”
