My Bristol Favourites: Lucy J Turner
Artist, digital illustrator, activist and workshop facilitator Lucy J Turner began to use art as a way to heal from trauma after she was diagnosed with a rare cancer in her early 20s.
Lucy’s work makes use of bold, bright and colourful designs and shapes, with her main inspiration being Black women bodies.
Lucy is the new illustrator of Bristol24/7’s Breakfast With Bristol24/7 interviews, which have made a return to print with the publication of our new quarterly magazine.

These are Lucy’s top-five Bristol favourites:
Rice & Things

The smell of the cooking from outside Rice & Things is familiar to anyone who has walked along Cheltenham Road – photo: Martin Booth
“Rice & Things on Cheltenham Road serves the most delicious homemade Jamaican food in Bristol in my opinion! It’s always so flavourful and the portions are always generous. My go-to dish is curry goat, and rice and peas. The chefs and staff here always make me smile.”
Trinity Centre community garden

“A little oasis in the heart of central Bristol. Trinity’s community garden was built by the community, for the community. There are always classes and workshops where you can learn about horticulture, organic foods and much more. It’s just nice to have some where to go and be still for a bit when you’re feeling overwhelmed.”
St Werburgh’s City Farm

“Another great outdoor community venue, St Werburgh’s City Farm is a small farm, with an emphasis on ‘small’. Surrounded by allotments and a beautiful country pub, the farm houses pigs, goats, chickens and lambs. It’s really nice to be able to go and look at some farm animals and feel away from the city, whilst being in the city.”
Arnolfini

An exhibition by Garry Fabian Miller is currently on display at the Arnolfini – photo: Martin Booth
“When I’m feeling uninspired, I take myself on ‘art dates’ around Bristol. The Arnolfini always makes me feel calm and invited. Some of the finest artists in the world have exhibited there and all exhibitions are available to go to for free!”
Arnos Vale Cemetery

“It might be strange to list a cemetery as one of my favourite places but if you’ve been to Arnos Vale, you’ll understand! The buildings and the monuments are all so unique and date back to the 1800s. It also have 45 acres of beautiful green space, which makes it perfect for a dog walk too.”
