My Bristol Favourites: Nida Manzoor

By Martin Booth  Friday Nov 15, 2024

Nida Manzoor is the Bafta-winning writer and director of Channel 4’s We Are Lady Parts and the action comedy film Polite Society, as well as directing two episodes of Doctor Who.

Throughout November at Watershed, Nida is co-curating Chicks, Kicks & Flicks which is celebrating women in action, on screen and behind the camera.

As part of the season, the 6pm screening of Polite Society on November 28 will be followed by a Q&A with Nida.

These are Nida’s top-five Bristol favourites:

Arnos Vale Cemetery

“What an atmospheric place for a contemplative walk! I love getting lost on the trails at Arnos Vale between the trees and the old gravestones. A walk back in time in a beautiful, historical cemetery. I highly recommend the guided tour! And I also love stopping at the cafe for a hot chocolate.”

The Sundial Kitchen

Breakfast, brunch or lunch? – photo: Sundial Kitchen

The Sundial Kitchen in Totterdown is my favourite brunch spot in Bristol! Delicious food, thoughtfully put together in a warm, welcoming atmosphere. I highly recommend the kimchi fried rice and the Turkish eggs, and the cheese cake is incredible! Love this place.”

Forbidden Worlds Film Festival

“My favourite festival in the UK is right here in Bristol! Celebrating the weird and wonderful, from obscure B movies to cult classics. Forbidden Worlds is an ode to genre movies, playing at the Bristol Megascreen. This festival is a proper good time at the movies, put on by true cinephiles. Iconic.”

Bookhaus

Bookhaus is a wonderfully curated bookshop in Wapping Wharf. I have spent hours perusing the shelves of interesting independent presses and political texts. Great events and wonderful reading groups here too.”

Watershed

Watershed is my favourite cinema in town. A Bristol institution. Brilliantly programmed with all the must-see independent films but also just a great place to hang out! I feel extremely lucky to have curated an action movie season featuring kick-ass women called Chicks, Kicks & Flicks. Check it out!”
