My Bristol Favourites: Olivia Maxwell-Yates
Olivia Maxwell-Yates is the owner and head chef of Lonely Mouth on Gloucester Road which was named by Bristol24/7 as Bristol’s best new cafe of 2024 in our roundup of the year.
Olivia previously worked in market stalls and restaurants in London before discovering a passion for Japanese ingredients and moving to Bristol.
In a break from the norm, Olivia’s top-five Bristol favourites are five pubs for different vibes:
is needed now More than ever
The Plough

“The Plough in Easton is probably my favourite all-rounder. Great pub, very Bristol, multi-cultural, best tacos in the UK (yeah I said it), great DJs, musicians and all-round vibes. I may also be a big lover of the Plough as it’s where Lonely Mouth started their journey in Bristol. So they obviously have fantastic taste!”
The Lazy Dog

“Definitely my favourite gastropub in Bristol. The Lazy Dog in Ashley Down is my local and very close to my heart. The staff are the best thing about this place, the food is a close second, the garden is big and amazing, and the beers are on point. Many a good time had here.”
The Pipe & Slippers

The infamous Pipe Dream at the Pipe & Slippers contains a shot of Kingston 62 white rum, two shots of Appleton Signature, pineapple juice, passionfruit syrup, lime juice, orange juice, grenadine, and a Wray & Nephews and absinthe float – photo: The Pipe & Slippers
“Definitely my favourite party pub. Epic DJs and vibes on Thursday to Saturday, and open till late. Pato has certainly made the Pipe & Slippers on Cheltenham Road an institution as it celebrated its 20-year anniversary last year. Their New Year’s Day party is a thing of legends and the Pipe Dreams are as dangerous as they are delicious.”
The Bell

“I don’t go all the time but if someone asked me to show them the real Bristol, I’d probably take them to the Bell off Jamaica Street. Again, very much an institution, they love to get heavy on the drum’n’bass nights and another all-round really good party pub. Big love!”
The Cadbury

“It’s a bit off the beaten track but this is my go-to meet-up pub. The Cadbury in Montpelier has a really good garden and good vibes. Great people, great times, great pub.”
