My Bristol Favourites: Peta Shillingford
Peta Shillingford is the co-organiser of Kiki Bristol, a group that provide space and events for Bristol-based LGBTQ+ people of colour. Peta is also a member of Easton Cowgirls FC, a socially conscious football team that welcomes people of all abilities, class, sexuality and race.
Here are Peta’s top-five Bristol favourites:
The Plough Inn
is needed now More than ever

Billy Bragg joins Peta and her Cowgirls teammates at the Plough
“My local, also known as HQ. I can’t talk about my favourite Bristol places without mentioning this institution. The Plough is where the Cowgirls and I go to celebrate or drown our sorrows after a match. It’s also one of our meeting points for Kiki Bristol. It has a brilliant, ever-changing selection of ales and ciders, and they make a banging, affordable roast on Sunday.”
West Street Kitchen

West Street Kitchen was named Bristol24/7’s best new cafe of 2017
“This fairly new coffee shop in Old Market – another regular Kiki meeting point – is such a pleasure to visit. West Street Kitchen is pretty low-key but you can tell that they put a lot of thought and effort into the food and drink they provide. Co-owners Millie and Nathen are always smiling, and always happy to answer any questions or requests. A great place to just get away, take some time out, and enjoy their delicious coffee and cake.”
Jeevan Sweets

Open since 2011, Jeevan Sweets is a family-run business
“This vegetarian Indian sweet shop and restaurant on Stapleton Road is full of tasty treats. Jeevan Sweets do vegetarian and vegan mains, some of my favourite samosas in Bristol, a selection of Indian sweets and many other items. Over time, I’m trying to taste them all!”
Bristol Women’s Football Casual League

Bristol Women’s Football Casual League matches are played at Brunel Academy
“This seven-a side league has been going from strength to strength. Originally starting out with four teams, the Bristol Women’s Football Casual League has grown to 14 teams from all around the city, as well as Portishead and Cardiff. With matches at Brunel Academy every three weeks, it’s a great way for women to play football that haven’t necessary tried it before. There are not many FA-affiliated women’s leagues that are so relaxed and friendly.”
Bristol Pride
“I remember when Bristol Pride consisted of a few gazebos and a queen on a Segway in the car park outside the Pineapple. Even though those times have a special place in my heart, I am delighted at how much Bristol Pride has grown since those days; even now completely outgrowing its current home at Millennium Square and Lloyds Amphitheatre. It’s such an important part of Bristol’s LGBTQ+ calendar, and it’s great to see the commitment that Daryl and the team put in to make it as inclusive and accessible as possible. Kiki Bristol have been working closely with them to try and achieve this.”
