My Bristol Favourites: Poppy Jackson

By Martin Booth  Thursday Jul 11, 2024

Poppy Jackson is an artist who specialises in tiny paintings of independent shops, pubs, cafes and more across Bristol.

Her first exhibition, Miniature Bristol: Stokes Croft Series, is taking place at Basement Beer on Upper York Street in St Paul’s on August 1.

Poppy’s original paintings of Stokes Croft businesses will be for sale, as well as prints, stickers and other merch in what she says will be “a celebration of art, the Stokes Croft community and its awesome independent businesses”.

“This tiny tap room is one of my favourite spots in and around Stokes Croft – which is saying something! Ben brews some epic beers on site, and events like art exhibitions, comedy nights and weekly art meetups make this a truly special place.”

“An old, traditional pub that also serves incredible, authentic Japanese food from Kansai Kitchen? Is the Hillgrove what dreams are made of?”

Cloak

Cloak, on Cheltenham Road near the arches, is one of my most recent happy discoveries in Bristol. It’s a cafe, bar and music venue, but it’s so much more than that. This queer-owned venue has created a totally unique space in Bristol that celebrates creativity and community, with awesome events like open mic nights and craft evenings.”

The Cider Box

“Is there anything more beautifully Bristolian than drinking cider inside a Victorian railway arch? I love the Cider Box‘s quirky tap room in St Philip’s, complete with cheese tasting nights, Cider Bingo and plenty of mead!”

Elemental

“There are so many amazing independent coffee shops in Bristol, but I love Elemental on Stokes Croft. It’s not just a cafe; it’s a not-for-profit community collective, a grocers and a bakery. There’s tons of space and natural light, too, so it’s a perfect sketching spot for me!”
