Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2021, Day 12: Young Bristol
Offering the city’s youth a choice of opportunities and experiences, Young Bristol is a charity that makes a positive and sustainable impact on young people’s lives in Bristol.
Volunteers are vital to the charity’s work, which provides community-based youth services for young people aged from eight to 25 during non-school hours by offering them accredited learning experiences and exciting opportunities.
The organisation was founded nearly a century ago in 1928 and was born from a desire to provide a space for young men in post-World War society I to socialise safely, away from the streets of Bristol.
is needed now More than ever
Today, the charity has grown to become one of Bristol’s leading youth charities.
Young Bristol’s mission has expanded to cater for all young people, including those from the most deprived parts of the city, and provide them with the means to “discover their true potential”.
Young Bristol believes in providing early intervention to children and young people to help firmly set them on a path away from patterns of crime and ultimately support them to achieve “great futures and lead great lives” as they grow into adulthood.
The organisation strives to achieve their goal by providing a huge assortment of programmes at a whole host of community venues that are designed to be both inspiring and fun.
Programmes include community youth clubs (including a mobile club on wheels), creative programmes, holiday clubs, outdoor employment programmes and training courses.
The charity’s pioneering work has been nationally recognised, having been awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service last year due its commitment to helping young people.

Hannah Somers, a spokesperson for Young Bristol, explained the global pandemic revealed some stark realities for young people in Bristol.
She said: “There have been a lot of significant issues for young people brought to light by the pandemic, however we know that these are not new issues. These include well-being, poor employment prospects in the city, mental health, food poverty.”
Jamie Cameron, chair of Young Bristol echoed this, saying “the support Young Bristol provides is needed now, more than ever.”
