How we can create a fairer food system in Bristol
In a new campaign run by the Global Goals Centre, in collaboration with Bristol24/7, a new local hero is being celebrated every week for their work supporting a different Sustainable Development Goal ahead of the Cop26 conference.
The 12th Sustainable Development Goal focuses on responsible production and consumption and the hero we are celebrating this week is Jimmy Nelson.
Jimmy is from Essential Trading, an organisation that has been building a different kind of food system. Working hard since 1970, Essential Trading is an employee-owned cooperative where all workers get a say in the way the business is run.
is needed now More than ever
Where possible, they purchase from local and organic food suppliers, and any food that they import arrives as sea cargo rather than airfreight, cutting emissions. All of their electrical power comes from solar panels and that the majority of their staff commute by bike whatever the weather.
“Responsible consumption is important because of the amount of food that goes to waste,” said Jimmy.
“Essential Trading only ever distributes to independent retailers. We specialize in organic, vegetarian and vegan food. All the food is imported and exported responsibly.”
“Problems like this may seem challenging but we can all club together and make a difference.”
The Global Goals Centre is an education charity using creative ways to inspire a fairer, greener future, has worked in partnership with 17 local community organisations, Bristol24/7’s Better Bristol and creative agency Tusko, to create this campaign, which is supported by Bristol City Council and the Bristol Climate Hub.
A series of 17 short videos, one for each of the 17 Global Goals, are being released from Tuesday 6th July. Each one highlights a Bristol hero who is doing something inspiring to help reach that Goal.
