How you can take action to encourage local wildlife
In a countdown to the COP-26 conference in November, the Global Goals Centre has partnered up with Bristol24/7 to celebrate the work of a local hero every week.
Every week, a different person from the local community is being recognised for their work around a different Sustainable Development Goal.
This week, the goal focuses on life on land. Our hero, Ben Barker, has been taking action to help nature’s recovery in the local area.
is needed now More than ever
The Avon Wildlife Trust nominated Ben thanks to his proactive work initiating conservation, getting people to grow wilder gardens, monitoring wildlife in BS3 and his hopes to extend this across Bristol.
“Across the entire planet, animals are disappearing. I can’t do a lot about elephants or rhinoceros but I can do something about wild animals in my neighbourhood,” says Ben.
“We raise people’s awareness of local wildlife and also encourage them to do things that encourage local wildlife. People can do lots of things to make a difference.”
If you want to encourage wildlife in your local area, there’s lots you can do. Download Avon Wildlife Trust’s handy guide and follow the advice in the Action for Insects guide and create an insect-friendly garden that is teaming with wildlife.
Global Goals Centre, an education charity using creative ways to inspire a fairer, greener future, has worked in partnership with 17 local community organisations, Bristol24/7’s Better Bristol and creative agency Tusko, to create this campaign, which is supported by Bristol City Council and the Bristol Climate Hub.
The #Bristol17 campaign will include many easy and affordable ways to get involved in local projects that make a real difference locally and globally.
