Reflecting on Talking LGBT+ Bristol
Last month Bristol24/7 and Tusko Films premiered Talking LGBT+ Bristol: a documentary funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund which shares the heritage of LGBT+ life in Bristol.
Following its premiere at Arnolfini and Watershed, the film was screened twice in Millennium Square as a part of Bristol Pride Day. Part of Talking LGBT+ Bristol was later shown on BBC Points West, followed by a discussion with those involved in the film’s production.
At the heart of the Bristol24/7 social impact agenda are our core values: investment, inspiration and inclusion. The documentary captures these principles, celebrating Bristol’s diversity through creative storytelling.
is needed now More than ever
However, the real value of Talking LGBT+ Bristol is in its impact. Our hope for the project was to encourage openness and discussion surrounding LGBT+ issues. Across our social media channels, the film made 950,000 impressions as the discussion built momentum with the hashtag #LGBT247.
The anonymous feedback we received from our survey is an encouraging sign of the film’s success. One participant praised the documentary as: “A very full, rich and emotional film about the struggles and realities of LGBT+ culture.”
Another commented on the personal approach: “Adding a personal perspective to the historical struggle. Really emotional and powerful – as well as informative. Feels really important. Also, a fabulous soundtrack.”
Ninety per cent of respondents to our feedback survey said they felt that it was very important to document LGBT+ Heritage and History.
The documentary will be given to Bristol Archives as a free resource, and we will also be offering the documentary to schools, colleges and universities as a valuable teaching resource. Watch the whole documentary at www.bristol247.com/news-and-features/social-impact/talking-lgbt-bristol-film/
