The charity making a difference in the community one dish at a time

By Beth Owen  Thursday Aug 1, 2019

Founded by award-winning food educator, Barny Haughton, Square Food Foundation is a community kitchen that offers a busy programme of cookery courses and classes for everyone.

This summer they are running a two day cookery course for children and teenagers. It’s a chance for participants to build a portfolio of delicious recipes that they can cook at home.

Their courses also include How To Be A Chef, a free 12 week course for 16-24 year olds to prepare them for a job in a kitchen. The course was set up as part of our Better Bristol initiative and runs twice a year. The next course begins in September and anyone can register their interest here.

Every Square Food Foundation event aims to deliver delicious food backed up by serious food education principles. Their ambition is to inform, encourage and inspire your approach to cooking.

All classes and events are made accessible and inclusive to everyone no matter their age, skill or budget. Money raised from masterclasses, corporate workshops and private parties is used to subsidise and support their work with schools and community groups.

The charity have introduced a Drop-in and Cook club for elderly or isolated adults and have worked with women trapped in sex work and addiction to improve their skill set, their confidence and above all their self-esteem.

They have also helped teenagers from local schools to get a qualification in Home Cooking. But their work doesn’t stop there, as they also work with groups of care home cooks who are charged with feeding up to 60 elderly and disabled every day.
