Young people on our How To Be A Chef course are cooking up a storm
The sun finally made an appearance as members of Bristol24/7’s Better Business network sailed towards Beese’s Riverside Bar and Garden.
Here, they were met by the team at Square Food Foundation and the young chefs who are taking part in the How To Be A Chef course, run by Square Food Foundation in partnership with Bristol24/7 as part of our Better Bristol initiative.
The chefs are only a week away from completing their 12-week course and have already completed work placements at Hart’s Bakery, Spike Island Cafe and Fosters Event Catering.

An integral part of the course is gaining experience in catering for large numbers and at events so Dylan, Charlotte and Chloe recently joined forces with previous young chef graduate Will to help prepare, cook and serve a three-course feast at a Food Connections for the the launch of the No Child Goes Hungry campaign.
They also ran a live cooking class as part of the Food Connections festival. “I enjoyed the events as they kept me busy and prepared me for what it’s like working in that sort of environment,” said Chloe.
The young chefs learnt how to make paella on a street food style stall for the event at Beese’s, where they were supported by FareShare South West who provided all the ingredients for both events.
“The events we’ve done went surprisingly swimmingly,” said Dylan. “I was surprised how well they’ve flowed, it was surprisingly fluid considering I’d never properly worked in a kitchen like that before. It gave me a lot of confidence.”
The course ends in July 2019, when the team will celebrate their graduation cooking street food style food at Bambalan for more than 300 people. Find out more here about the celebration.
