‘Bristol Airport’s expansion can unlock the entire region’s potential’

By Steve Smith  Wednesday Jan 1, 2025

Our region is at a crossroads. After years of delays, Bristol Airport has finally secured planning approval for a vital phase of its expansion.

While the plans take shape, the airport’s vision for further growth has ignited debate. Some oppose the progress we desperately need, while others sit on the fence.

As the Conservative candidate for mayor of the West of England, I am backing Bristol Airport’s expansion because it will deliver local jobs, open up new routes to the rest of the world and bring in more inward investment to our region.

This expansion represents a major injection of private investment into our region – investment that is forecast to support more than 37,000 jobs, both at the airport and throughout its supply chain.

From construction and logistics to retail and tourism, this project will create opportunities for thousands of families across the West of England.

Bristol Airport’s expansion can help unlock the potential of the entire region.

Flights to long-haul destinations such as the United States and the Middle East will be great for the local economy, attracting inward investment and visitors.

For local companies, this is an opportunity to trade with new markets and thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

Currently, too many local people have to endure long drives to Heathrow or Birmingham simply to get the flights they need. This is inconvenient, inefficient and not good for the environment.

Expanding Bristol Airport will provide passengers with convenience, choice and high-quality services, right here in the West of England.

Some argue that expansion and environmental responsibility are incompatible. I disagree.

Bristol Airport has committed to achieving net-zero operations by 2030 and is working with partners to deliver net-zero flights by 2050. Growth and sustainability can – and must – go hand in hand.

Opposing this expansion risks holding our region back at a time when we should be seizing opportunities to grow and thrive.

While others hesitate or oppose, I believe in pushing forward with a plan that will deliver for the West of England.

If elected as mayor for the West of England, I will ensure that this expansion delivers on its promises – responsibly, sustainably and in the interests of local people.

Let’s take advantage of this opportunity to secure a brighter future for the West of England.
