Sports & Convention Centre is ‘game-changer’ for Bristol Flyers
Bristol Flyers head coach Andreas Kapoulas says that proposals to build a 3,626-seater arena next to Ashton Gate Stadium “is a game-changer for the Flyers but also the sport of basketball in this city”.
The Sports & Convention Centre (SSC) will become the permanent home of the Flyers, who currently play their home games at the SGS College Arena in Stoke Gifford.
The team’s own home in BS3 – designed by Liverpool-based architects KKA – will join a ‘sporting quarter’ which will also contain buildings including a new hotel, flats, offices and a multi-storey car park, with the SSC able to host events throughout the year.
is needed now More than ever
“This is a game-changer for the Flyers but also the sport of basketball in this city,” said Kapoulas.
“It means that we will not only be financially sustainable but that we will be able to compete at the very highest level – including in Europe.
“It will be the third largest venue in the BBL and means we will be able to attract talent and extend our academy pathway and community provision of the sport.
“The sporting quarter will provide a minimum of an extra 40,000 hours of community sport which is huge as we know how the much desperate need there is for community access to sporting facilities.”
