England beat Australia in Bristol to keep Ashes hopes alive

By Martin Booth  Thursday Jul 13, 2023

The Ashes came to Ashley Down on Wednesday as a sell-out crowd watched England beat Australia.

England won the first one-day international of the multi-format series by two wickets to level the scores at 6-6 with two games to play.

The hosts needed to chase 264 and after a middle-order stutter, crossed the line thanks in no small part to an unbeaten 75 from captain Heather Knight and a 19 not-out cameo by Kate Cross.

It was England’s first one-day international victory over world champions Australia since 2017 and their highest ever ODI run chase.

The teams travel to Southampton on Sunday for the next game in the points-based series.
