Glos complete T20 double over Somerset

By Milan Perera  Monday Jul 8, 2024

Gloucestershire have completed an emphatic T20 double over Somerset, with Ben Charlesworth dispatching the penultimate delivery for six to give Glos a five-wicket win.

The team’s winning performances on the pitch are in sharp contrast to issues away from the field of play, but Glos now hope to continue their winning form and reach the quarter-finals of the Vitality Blast.

Beau Webster, man of the match in Taunton thanks to a quickfire 39 and bowling figures of one for 23, said winning the West Country derby is always special.

“All of of the boys did really well today,” said the Australian all-rounder.

He added: “We’re hoping to get in those quarter-finals and not just qualify but finish as high as we can.”

The hosts set a competitive target of 195 at Taunton, thanks to Tom Banton – who was dropped three times – hitting an unbeaten 77.

Banton and Ben Green shared an important sixth-wicket partnership of 88 where Green hit 47 off 25 deliveries.

The boundaries were hard to come by and Somerset were 148 for five at the end of the 18th over.

Leading up to it, Somerset also lost three wickets cheaply that saw Tom Abell, Sean Dickson and Lewis Gregory back in the pavilion without troubling the scorers much.

However the momentum was shifted for hosts as David Payne was hit for 14 runs in the 19th over and Josh Shaw’s final over fetched 6,4,4 and 2 off the first four balls before being removed for bowling two full tosses above waist height.

Despite the inauspicious start with the loss of Cameron Bancroft for a duck, Gloucestershire piled on 55 runs in their powerplay of six overs for the loss of one wicket.

Hammond played an anchor role with James Bracey where the pair put on 66 runs before Hammond looped to long-on having hit the previous delivery for a six.

Skipper Jack Taylor and Webster kept the scoreboard ticking for Glos where they carved out 20 runs in the 15th over.

Somerset captain Lewis Gregory removed Webster but Charlesworth was determined to take the visitors over the line when he struck a six to seal a memorable win with one ball to spare.
