New Zealand win World Cup opener in Bristol

The eyes of the cricketing world were on Bristol on Saturday as the Brightside Ground hosted one of the opening games of the Women’s World Cup.

New Zealand convincingly beat Sri Lanka by nine wickets, with the player of the match award being given to Kiwi bowler Holly Huddleston for her five wickets for 35 runs, and captain Suzi Bates scoring an unbeaten 109.

England suffered a surprise defeat in their opening game, losing to India by 35 runs in Derby. England has won the World Cup both times it has previously hosted the competition.

The ‘cricketeers’ are the tournament’s volunteers

There will be seven more Women’s Cricket World Cup matches played in Bristol during June and July, including at least three England fixtures.

The hosts play in Bristol for the first time on July 5 when they face South Africa, with further England games in Bristol versus Australia on July 9 and West Indies on July 15, with a semi-final on July 18.

The Brightside Ground also hosts Sri Lanka vs Australia on June 29, Australia vs New Zealand on July 2, Australia vs India on July 12.

Tickets for all matches cost £10 for adults and £2 for children.
