Why the UK is a great sports tourism destination

By Advertising Feature  Tuesday Feb 13, 2024

The UK has been home to some of the most popular sports from their inception, since England invented many of them, such as cricket, football, and rugby. Given the wealth of English history and heritage present in those sports and others, the UK boasts some of the most celebrated leagues and sporting events around the world.

Some UK teams have been around for well over a century and have become hugely popular around the globe. For instance, football clubs Manchester United FC and Liverpool FC have massive followings across the Americas, Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Oceanic regions. Beyond football, sports like cricket feature the famous Ashes tournament, and of course, the British F1 Grand Prix is also hugely popular worldwide. With the choice of so many iconic sporting destinations and events to experience, the UK has become a mecca for sports tourism.

With so many high-profile teams in the UK, it’s natural that fans and sports bettors from all around the world would want to wager on their success. This, paired with some UK football teams being the best in the world, means it’s no surprise that the UK is home to some of the best football betting sites, too. The colossal growth recently experienced in the iGaming industry has created a significant market for online sports betting in the UK. With new betting sites popping up all the time, there are now plenty of safe and secure online betting platforms for players to bet on a variety of sports. The options are endless, with a huge variety of ways to bet, such as on the outcome of specific matches, or even other metrics like the score or an individual player’s performance, leaving football fans with no shortage of options, whether they are attending the match in-person or watching it from their accommodation.

The UK betting industry has a close affiliation with the sporting culture there and often sponsors many famous professional teams across different sports. An enthralling way to enjoy UK sporting culture is through sports betting, adding to the excitement of actually visiting the region and catching a live match or major sporting event.

The largest sporting attraction in the UK is by far the Premier League. With a global fan base that regularly follows this famous competition, it’s become a massive selling point for sports tourism. Widely regarded as the most competitive among the major European leagues, it features many historic and widely supported teams like Liverpool FC, Manchester United FC, Tottenham Hotspur FC, Chelsea FC, and Manchester City FC.

Many of the world’s biggest and most talented football stars play football there, and to locals, football is a religion. The atmosphere at stadiums, the historic nature of the teams, and stadiums make it a focal point of sports tourism and generate billions every year. The biggest teams are, of course, aware of all the interest, with most offering VIP match day packages for tourists to experience the pulsating matches live.

Experiencing the jaw-dropping football culture while catching a match at the stadium live is not an experience that can ever fully be described in a way that does it justice. Between the famous football chants, raucous stadium atmospheres, and the frenetic pace of Premier League football, live matches are a treat whether you’re a fan of the sport or not.

With some of the most historic and famous football stadiums located in the UK, many of the famous clubs also offer stadium tour packages, with VIP access to the stadiums, facilities, and sometimes, even a chance to personally interact with players and management staff. The stuff of dreams for fans, visiting iconic stadiums like Liverpool’s Anfield, Manchester United’s Old Trafford, or Wembley, makes for a once-in-a-lifetime experience for sports tourists.

On the other hand, since Netflix’s hit show Drive to Survive, Formula 1 racing has become more popular than ever. Since 1950, the UK’s iconic Silverstone circuit has been a consistent fixture on the F1 calendar. A legendary track that has witnessed some amazing moments over the years, F1 packages make for an amazing experience when the world’s premier motor racing event descends on it every year.

There are some great packages available that include everything from flights to accommodation. For those who can afford it, more prestigious packages may even feature some limited, behind-the-scenes access to the pit crews, cars, and drivers.

Aside from the major crowd-pleasing sports like Premier League football and Formula 1, there are plenty of other amazing sporting events, sports tourism sights, and stadiums to visit. Between the UK’s famous horse racing events, the London Marathon, Wimbledon for tennis lovers, the British Open for golf followers, The Ashes for cricket fans, or the Tri Nations for fans of rugby, there’s something for everyone when it comes to UK sports tourism.

If you’re a fan of sports and are planning a trip, there are plenty of reasons to consider a UK sports holiday. Of course, while you’re there, nothing stops you from fitting in plenty of ordinary touristy attractions too, like Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the region’s many historical churches, museums, stunning hotels, or even a Harry Potter theme park.
