Third Bristol City mural unveiled celebrating club legends

By Karen Johnson  Monday Dec 16, 2024

Robins fans will now see the faces of six legends painted on a building near Ashton Gate.

The mural is part of a series of murals commemorating some of Bristol City’s most well-known former players, with two other murals having previously been unveiled.

The new mural on Ashton Road features former players Jimmy Rogers, Jantzen Derrick, John Galley, Tom Ritchie, Alan Walsh and Bob Taylor who led the football team to several wins between the 1950s and 1960s.

Three of the six players – Ritchie, Derrick and Walsh – were at the unveiling on Saturday.

The new mural has been painted by Bristol artist Andrew Burns Colwill on a building next to the Coopers Arms.

Founder of Bristol City Former Players’ Association, Neil Palmer, told the BBC that the sight of the finished mural “evokes something” for the players.

Painted on the other side of the Coopers Arms is the face of legend Chris Garland, who sadly passed away in July 2023.

And two popular former captains – Geoff Merrick and Louis Carey – are painted on the wall of the Rising Sun.
