Ashton Gate braced for historic triple-header

By Tom Pickering  Friday Jan 26, 2024

Beginning on Friday night, Ashton Gate Stadium is set for three consecutive days of sport with Bristol City men’s and women’s sides as well as Bristol Bears men’s playing crucial games in BS3.

The unprecedented triple-header kicks off at 7.45pm on Friday with City men facing Nottingham Forest in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The second game at 3.05pm on Saturday sees Ashton Gate host a huge West Country rugby derby as Bristol Bears battle it out against Bath.

The triple-header concludes at 2pm on Sunday afternoon with perhaps the most important game of the weekend as an intense relegation scrap will be played out between City women and West Ham.

In a period of less than 48 hours, some 60,000 fans will be heading to Ashton Gate for the three matches.

Ashton Gate CEO, Mark Kelly, said: “To have three teams play at home, back-to-back, over a period of less than 48 hours from Friday night to Sunday afternoon, is a testimony to the incredible hard work that goes on continuously behind the scenes to deliver something of this scale.

“The stage is set for a wonderful weekend of sport in the city.

“The demand to come to Ashton Gate for sport and other events, such as welcoming Super Rugby champions the Crusaders from New Zealand next month; the two Take That concerts in June and Ashton Gate Presents BS3’s music festival just a couple of weeks later, is enormous.

“We are committed to putting Bristol on the international sports and events map with the associated economic benefits that hosting these kind of events will have on the city and our community.”
