Bears Women and City Women now more closely aligned with men’s teams

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Jun 29, 2021

Bristol Bears Women and Bristol City Women are both relocating to the two clubs’ training facilities in Abbots Leigh and Failand where the men’s teams are already based.

The aim is to “drive alignment” across the organisations, with the Bears Women programme aiming to be one of the best women’s rugby programmes in the UK while the job of City Women is to rebuild after being relegated to the Championship last season.

The Vixens played their home games at Bath City’s Twerton Park stadium in the most recent campaign but will now welcome fans to the Robins High Performance Centre for home fixtures.

Bears director of Rugby Pat Lam said: “It’s always been part of the strategic plan to align the Bears Women’s programme to the men’s, and bring the senior Academy all under one roof.

“It’ll have a massively positive impact for our game and Bears team culture.

“We believe that the integration and sharing of ideas and best practice will lift performances for all of our Bears teams.

“The High Performance Centre is a place that Bears Women can call home and everything is in place for the team to achieve their performance objectives.”

Bristol City chairman Jon Lansdown said: “As we embark on a rebuilding phase for Bristol City Women in the Championship it’s important that we begin the integration of the women’s programme into our world-class facility at the High Performance Centre.

“The 2021/22 season will see City Women have a Bristol-based home venue for their fixtures, which is vital as we look to reconnect with our fanbase after 18 months of playing behind closed doors.

“Having the men’s, women’s and Academy programmes under one roof is our vision for the club and this is the first step towards sharing best practice from a coaching, medical and athletic performance standpoint.”
