Bristol University bringing home gold
With Team GB now returned to Blighty from Rio, the boffins at Bristol University have worked out that with two golds and a silver, if the university was a country it would have finished 39th in the medal table, ahead of the likes of India, Turkey and Singapore.
Recent graduate Georgie Twigg became a double Olympic medal winner after the women’s hockey team took home gold in Rio.

Twigg was not the only graduate to bring home a medal this year, with Hannah Mills (below left) also winning gold in the women’s 470 sailing with her partner Saskia Clark.
It was one better than in London for the pair, who won silver in the same category in 2012.
A silver medal was also won by Tom Mitchell, who was captain of the men’s rugby 7s.
Mitchell obtained a BA in English and Philosophy at Bristol University before going to Oxford. At 15-a-side, he can play at centre and full back as well as fly half and he led England Students in their 29-25 defeat by the Portugal national side in Lisbon.
These three medal winners were all members of the Performance Squad of athletes at Bristol University which helps student athletes continue with their sporting careers without compromising their academic progress.
Members of the squad have access to advice on everything from nutrition to sports psychology and also have access to training from top coaches and financial support.
University sport manager Matt Paine said: “We’re so incredibly proud of all of our alumni who have taken part in the Rio Olympics. To come away with two golds and a silver is a phenomenal achievement.”
