Bears Women beaten in Allianz Cup final by Saracens

By Martin Booth  Sunday Apr 28, 2024

Bristol Bears Women head coach Dave Ward said that getting to the Allianz Cup final has been “a learning curve” for his team.

“We now have been in a final and lost a final. We’ve learned how to win semis, we now need to learn how to win finals,” Ward said.

Playing in front of more than 1000 fans at their home ground, Shaftesbury Park in Frenchay, Bears lost 17-31 to Saracens.

Among those watching in the stands were Bears director of rugby Pat Lam and former club captain Steven Luatua.

Deborah Wills scored two scintillating tries for the Bears and Ella Lovibond the other but the silverware went to the team from north-west London.

Ward added: “The crowd were unbelievable today. The Bristol chants, the way they got behind the girls. Even the reception as everyone came in, it was a very special day.

“As a Bristolian and obviously as the Bristol Bears Women head coach, I just love that passionate support. Just stick behind us. We’ve got some big games to come as well.”
