Bristol Bears have got their mojo back

By Martin Booth  Friday Mar 3, 2023

Something just clicked for the Bristol Bears against Northampton on Friday night. The match finished 62-8 thanks to nine tries from Pat Lam’s men.

Captain Harry Randall and substitute Ioan Lloyd both scored two tries, with one each from Harry Thacker, Chris Vui, George Kloska, Fitz Harding and Jake Heenan.

But it wasn’t solely about attack, with Harding the leader of the pack making 22 tackles in the first half alone.

Among a long highlights reel, one is among the all-time Bristol Bears tries, with Randall being on the scoresheet but all the plaudits for Piutau.

Piutau pirouetted out of a tackle, spun through 360-degrees, wriggled away from a Saints player tugging at his shirt, made another sidestep that almost took him into Greville Smyth Park and then kicked deftly off his left foot under pressure with Randall gleefully gathering the bouncing ball.

Randall still had work to do to get his second try of the match but evaded the attention of the defender to cross the line.

“Flipping heck that was unreal,” wrote former England player Ugo Monye.

It just about summed up proceedings on a sensational evening of rugby at Ashton Gate.
