Bristol’s LGBTQ+-inclusive rugby club returns to the playing field
The South West’s first inclusive rugby club has been able to continue training despite the pandemic thanks to support from a microgrant.
Formed in 2005, Bristol Bisons RFC is a group of gay, straight, and bisexual men from Bristol, Somerset, South Gloucestershire who play rugby both on a friendly and competitive basis.
Any men are welcome to the club, regardless of playing ability, background or experience and have returned to their pitch at Clifton Rugby Ground after receiving a grant from the Voice and Influence Partnership, which makes sure that individuals, groups and communities whose voices aren’t always heard are listened to.
is needed now More than ever
“Since restrictions eased on the March 29, the Bristol Bisons have been able to train twice a week safely and effectively, with on average 30 players coming along to training sessions, providing a community and support network which is Covid safe,” says Bernie Francis, membership secretary for the club.
The microgrant, which is up to £250 for each organisation, has covered costs to keep the club playing according to England Rugby guidance.

Hand sanitiser must be used every 15 minutes by all players and coaches and any used rugby balls must be scrubbed clean and disinfected after 15 minutes of use.
“Nine to ten uses of hand sanitiser per person for 30 plus people per session add up quick,” says Bernie, who adds that the club has welcomed another 16 members to the club since April, bringing their membership to more than 70.
Some of the funding has also been used to help members complete first aid courses to ensure continuing safety of our members as we play and train.
The Bisons has been working with the Voice and Influence Partnership to build and develop a resilient network of safe and inclusive LGBTQ+ communities across Bristol, taking part in online panels supporting organisations through the pandemic.
As restrictions ease, the club is hoping to be able to take part in Bristol Pride in July and begin playing matches in the national International Gay Rugby league in the new season later this year.
