Janse van Rensburg named in Premiership team of the season
Having already secured Bristol Bears supporters’ and players’ player of the season, Benhard Janse van Rensburg has now been named in the Premiership Rugby Team of the Season.
The 27-year-old centre, who joined the Bears last summer after London Irish went into administration, was rewarded for a sensational debut season in Bristol, which has seen him play almost every minute of Premiership rugby.
Janse van Rensburg was hugely influential in the Bears’ magnificent run at the back end of the season, which saw them win six of seven games and narrowly miss out on the play-offs by only two points.
The South African scored a crucial try against Gloucester at the end of March to help see off the game, as well as two in April’s demolition of Newcastle Falcons, the first of which was nominated for the Premiership try of the season.
In recognition of his scintillating performances against Newcastle and Leicester Tigers a week later, Janse van Rensburg was named Player of the Month for April.
Speaking about him following the victory over Newcastle, Pat Lam, Bristol Bears’ director of rugby, told BBC Radio Bristol that he is “a real coach’s dream”.
Lam added: “I normally ask players what would you like from me as a coach, how can I help you, and he goes ‘Just tell me what you want and I’ll do it’. That’s what he does.
“You ask him to present the ball a certain way and he’ll present it, you ask him to go this high he’ll go that high, you ask him to go left he’ll go left.”
