Bristol24/7 Student Guide 2020: Bristol on screen

By Carenza Bramwell  Thursday Aug 20, 2020

Bristol’s connection to the screen – big or small – is no secret, falling into the top 20 filming locations in the UK.

The extensive mix of Victorian and modern architecture, as well as its nearby countryside, makes Bristol a location scout’s dream.

Bristol has played a key role on our screens, often being transformed beyond recognition. It has starred as Victorian London for the 2012 Doctor Who Christmas special The Snowmen, and has also featured in Sherlock series three for John and Mary’s Wedding. Silbury Road in Ashton Vale, a mass of rolling hills and trees, was transformed for The Casual Vacancy to become the central location of The Fields.

Being Human
The first two series of the BBC supernatural comedy drama Being Human are set in Totterdown. Multiple locations, including Clifton Suspension Bridge and the BRI aere also featured in the show, which revolved around a group of supernatural creatures trying to live a normal life in the city.

Skins
The much-loved teen drama from the early 2000s was set and filmed in Bristol. Visiting College Green will be a familiar location for fans of the show, as will Thekla, which was featured. Set in a fictional Bristolian sixth form, the schools actually used were John Cabot Academy and Henbury School.

Aardman Animations
You just have to walk around the city to see Shaun the Sheep and Gromit’s everywhere. The beloved animation studio started its life in the city in the 1980s and is still based there more than 40 years later. In recent years, the company has formed an even stronger connection with the city, with Bristolian’s featuring in one of their recent films: the 2018 film Early Man used the voices of locals in crowd scenes.

Thirteen
Starring Jodie Cormer before her break out role as Vilanelle in Killing Eve, Thirteen was a BBC 2016 miniseries about missing woman Ivy Moxam. Kidnapped at age 13, she escapes at age 26 and integrates back into normal life while her trauma hangs over her.  The finale of the show was filmed in the Lockleaze suburb of the city, with the rest of the show being shot on location as well.
