The arts night supporting young people with cancer

By Betty Woolerton  Thursday Oct 20, 2022

“I was diagnosed with stage four lymphoma last year, at the end of November, beginning of December,” said Kamui Oshino matter of factly.

“I had quite a rigorous treatment within four months. Essentially, my experience from that is what made me want to do this charity event.”

“After all this, I just thought I’m going to get on with everything in my life.”

Divergence is a platform dedicated to representing artists who identify as LGBTQIA+, having a disability or underlying health condition or part of a minority community.

With all profits being donated to Young Lives vs Cancer, it has been set up by 21-year-old Kamui who wanted to support young people grappling with diagnoses.

The UWE Bristol student, who is gender fluid, added: “I want a platform to represent people with disabilities and underlying health conditions, because I found it extremely hard getting back into uni, at the start of healing.”

“I want there to be enough support for young people like me to go back into work and performing – which is such a hard career to have if you have a health condition.

Hosted by David Puck, the event at Loco Klub will see music, drag and burlesque performances from a mixture of up-and-coming and established artists – including K-Rush, Roux, Sadie Fox.

“Hopefully my little baby can grow and become a bigger event and hopefully support more charities, more artists. My vision is for it to be the festival of many things,” Kamui said.
