Welcome to the University of the West of England

By Liam Cope  Thursday Sep 23, 2021

Congratulations on your enrolment to UWE and welcome to Bristol.

So, what are the best things to do now you’re here? If we put the obvious aside, like freshers, which I’m sure needs no introduction, what you’re left with is a whole slew of activities tailored made for every type of student.

Even when you’ve been here as long as I have, there’s always something new tucked away in some nook and cranny for you to discover.

It’s best to just open yourself up to any and all possibilities. As a newly minted UWE student, you’re now privy to – and this might be my bias talking – a most excellent campus experience, with all kinds of amenities to tide you over during Bristol’s beautiful summers and cosy West of England winters.

We have a number of gyms available as well as bars and cafes for those who need a breather after those long days of studying. If you don’t fancy a walk to the shops there’s the Students’ Union, which always manages to
meet those inconvenient cravings.

As for Bristol, each UWE campus is given a direct bus line through to the city centre, giving you no excuse to not make the most of your stay. Once there, it can seem a touch overwhelming but over time you’ll come to know the place like the back of your hand.

If you fancy putting a few miles on your soul then there are plenty of cultural institutions, such as the Bristol Hippodrome, which allowed me the opportunity to watch a beautiful rendition of Swan Lake.

And for those adventurous types with a penchant for flavour, there are all manner of restaurants with food
choices from every corner of the world.

It would be a shame to not at least mention the beautiful hallmark at the centre of all this: the harbourside. Walk along the docks on a quiet summer night, the lights of the city reflecting off the water. There really is nothing quite like it.

Although a touch brief, I hope this has at least given you a taste of what life is like in Bristol. Don’t worry though, there are still plenty of articles ahead in this guide that go into much more detail about all the fantastic things your new city has to offer.

All I can say for now is, have a great time and say yes to everything.

You won’t regret it.
