Food / Pubs and Bars

Bristol’s most atmospheric pubs

By Savannah Coombe  Tuesday Sep 28, 2021

The Hope & Anchor
38 Jacob’s Wells Road, Clifton, BS8 1DR

This pub has no doubt ended up on a lot of these lists. Although it looks small from the outside, it boasts an amazing pub garden out back.

The terrace winds up the side of Brandon Hill with loads of nooks and crannies to hide away in.

Food is provided by Naasto Baasto, a Gujarati pop-up from Monica Patel-Campbell selling phenomenal Indian treats. Even better than this, their cheapest pint, a pale ale, starts at £2.50.

It’s also a fully vegan pub, from wines to beers to food!

The White Harte
54-58 Park Row, BS1 5LH

If you want to live out your American frat party college dreams, the White Harte close to the top of Park Street is the place.

Equipped with a pool table, loaded fries and a TV for every big sports fi xture, you can’t beat it for its student atmosphere.

They house a great selection of beers which are regularly changed up. The pub also has a £25 daily bottomless brunch.

Plus, they’ll be offering £3.50 cocktails, craft beer and cider to students every Thursday.

Grain Barge
Hotwell Road, Hotwells, BS8 4RU

A pub…on a boat? That’s right! Grain Barge is well worth the trip.

Their extensive beer menu (they are owned by the team behind Bristol Beer Factory) leaves nothing to be desired and their bar staff really know their stuff.

The Sunday roast is incredible with loads of veggie options – make sure to make a reservation ahead of time as they fill up fast.

I personally can recommend their Bloody Marys.

The best part of Grain Barge is the view. All the tables look out onto the Floating Harbour and you have a direct view of the SS Great Britain.

Grain Barge even has its own mooring point, so the rare few of you who have access to a boat can pull up straight from the water.
