St. Nicholas’ market’s best street food

By Bristol24/7  Wednesday Sep 16, 2015

St Nicholas’ market, known affectionately as St Nick’s, is an absolute gem tucked away in the middle of Bristol city centre. With a selection of stalls selling everything from second hand books to home-made gifts, it’s a great place to spend a few hours mooching around. But where St. Nicks really comes into its own is its amazing selection of street food. With British and Italian, Greek and Caribbean, Moroccan and more you are spoilt for choice by the delicious goodies on offer. So, here are my recommendations for any foodie new to Bristol.

Firstly, something to get you in the West Country mood, a nice pie from PieMinister. Established in Bristol in 2003, PieMinister now had branches all over the country, but I personally think they’re tastiest in Bristol! They have such a good range of pies on offer, the Chicken of Aragon is a personal favourite (chicken, bacon and tarragon packed into buttery pastry, on creamy mash), but the Heidi (Somerset goats’ cheese, sweet potato, spinach and red onion) is also a top choice for the veggies. PieMinister is perfect for a warm lunch after a spot of shopping!

If you’re looking for something that packs a bit more of a punch, you’re spoilt for choice at St. Nicks. Caribbean Wrap, also based in the Glass Arcade, is a fabulously yummy pick-me-up. From less than £5 you can choose from chickpea curries, to spicy rices, to jerk chicken and mango sauce. Portions come in small, medium and large so could also serve as a small mid-afternoon snack.

For anyone with a sweet tooth Ahh Toots is your new one-stop-shop. This adorable tea room is an instagrammer’s heaven, not to mention the cakes are just mouth-watering. With vegan and gluten-free options there really is no excuse not to sit down with a good friend and a slab of Red Velvet cake. They also make bespoke celebration cakes, starting from £35, if you’ve got an occasion and some cash to splash!

You will soon discover as a Bristolian the falafel market is fiercely competitive. Although Taka Taka on the Triangle to Falafel King in Cotham are closer to the University, Eat-a-Pita down in St Nick’s is well worth the trip. Don’t be put off by the cues, they’re only testament to the fabulous flavour explosions you’re about to experience in your mouth! With freshly prepared, locally sourced, healthy ingredients you can’t complain! Again, another lunch for under a fiver at St Nicks!

So, there you have it! A comprehensive guide to the best street food St. Nick’s has to offer. There’s nothing wrong with treating yourself to a little bit of what you fancy every now and then, so whatever that may be, St. Nicks is the treasure trove of flavours any student new to Bristol would be a fool to miss out on. Enjoy!
