UWE Bristol’s new £7m science labs

By Ellie Pipe  Monday May 20, 2019

New state-of-the-art science laboratories at UWE Bristol will help ensure students can gain the skills required to shine in their chosen fields.

The £7m facility, known as the ‘Lab Zone’, comprises a connected series of research labs and teaching spaces for use by more than 1,000 undergraduates and post-graduates studying forensic, biological, biomedical, environmental and conservation science.

A post-graduate research centre has also been created, providing improved facilities for masters and PhD research students.

The Lab Zone is a connected series of research labs and teaching spaces

Dr Lyn Newton, head of the Department of Applied Sciences, said: “We’ve always had a vision of bringing the labs together and making them better connected, more open in layout and with much greater visibility for students and staff.

“These new labs are vastly improved, with better lighting, flooring and surfaces, all resulting in an improved teaching and learning experience.

“This is significant investment for our students and I’m pleased the work is now complete. Our students will benefit from the enhanced facilities and develop the lab skills needed for the latest jobs in industry.”

Undergraduate and post-graduate students will use the labs

It is hoped the facility will keep attracting students, staff and research funding for years to come

Professor Steven Neill, pro vice-chancellor and executive dean for the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences, added: “This has been a complex multi-million pound investment by the university which will attract and support future students, staff and research investment for years to come.

“I’d like to congratulate our dedicated staff for the excellent team work across the university that made this project possible and successful.”
