UWE student makes final of prestigious national awards
UWE animation student Ed Leicester’s short film has been selected for an award at the National Royal Television Society Awards.
His animation, Heist, earned him a nomination in the Undergraduate Animation category, and is now through to the final round. The awards ceremony will be held on June 16 at the British Film Institute in London.
Drawing inspiration from his love for classic heist movies from the 80s and 90s, Ed developed a storyline involving a plan, robbing a bank, the ringing of alarms and a dramatic police shoot out.

Talking about what made his film unique, Ed says: “I have represented the story by using graphic motion effects, making it more abstract”.
He described the creation process as “quite a challenge” but “quite therapeutic”. This comes as no surprise, considering he had to draw the entire animation by hand.
When asked about his time at university in Bristol, Ed said: “UWE has been great – I found the guidance really helpful.
“The university has been great at guiding me along the way and giving me some great opportunities, such as an internship at Wonky Animations,” he added.
Chris Webster, the programme leader for animation at UWE Bristol, described Ed as “a talented animator”.
“We are thrilled at his success in getting through to the final round,” he said. “We are proud of the achievements of all of our talented students who performed brilliantly in the regional competition this year.”
