Venue: Christmas Steps Gallery

Vibrant cityscapes by Bristol-based fine artist Tom Lietzau: a “personal perspective on the city’s iconic spots”

The exhibition features visions of Avon Gorge, Broad Quay, and Avon New Cut, set in the early 1900s, alongside views of contemporary Bristol (Bristol Docks, detail, pictured).

Works include Burning Sky over Park Street (pictured below), featured in the local press as ‘prophetic’ as it was finished days before a fire broke out in a Bristol University building near Park Street at the turn of 2018.

The paintings belong to the Genius Loci series, emerging from Tom’s fascination with Bristol’s picturesque setting and its complex history. Says Tom: “A ‘Place’ can inspire me to inquire about what it was like in the past, who lived here and how they lived. Since arriving in Bristol, I carefully studied old Bristol photographs and history books and talked to local people.

“I went on several guided walks and explored streets and corners on my own, getting lost and finding my way around.

“I wanted to capture the essence of the place which is beyond time, and to express the emotions behind every image.”

Alongside original paintings, there will be limited edition prints and cards available to purchase. The artist will be present at the exhibition.

Mar 13-18, 10am-6pm daily.
