Light Waves

Date: Wednesday, Oct 24 2018 - Monday, Nov 5 2018
Venue: Underfall Yard
Artists
Justin Quinnell

Continuous photographic exposures of the North Atlantic from the masts of tall ships, by photographer Justin Quinnell. Exposures range from one week to seven months.

“Long-duration pinhole photographs or Solargraphs have been with us for a while: the original was made by Dominique Stroobant in 1982,” Justin explains.

“The emergence of digital scanning opened up several accessible techniques which, when combined with the indestructible and cheap, battery-free qualities of pinhole cameras, can uncover images impossible with digital technology.

“A few years ago I began experimenting with moving cameras. I then worked alongside the sustainable wine importers, Porto Bristol, which has enabled previously unseen images of journeys and time.”

Bristol-based Justin Quinnell is one of the world’s leading exponents of pinhole photography. He is a founding director of the Real Photography Company in Bristol.

Underfall Yard, Oct 24-Nov 5, 9am-5pm daily. For more info, visit www.pinholephotography.org/Light%20Waves.htm
