Hammer & Tongue: Saili Katebe & Aiysha Humphreys
Monthly open poetry slam night hosted by Hammer & Tongue. This month’s headline acts are Saili Katebe (pictured) and Aiysha Humphreys.
Saili Katebe (AKA The Blissful Nomad) is a Zambian born writer based in the south west. As a writer and a performer he is always looking to connect with different disciplines and creative outlets, exploring his curiosity with creativity and recklessness.
Aiysha Humphreys is a Bristol- based spoken word performer and mythological creature in residence. Their poetry deals with the topics of mental illness, love, trauma, queer identity and their love of oranges. They exude an enchanting calmness in the delivery of their poetry that contrasts the harrowing nature of what they write about. They have performed at events all over the Southwest, featured on BBC Radio Bristol and have qualified for the Hammer & Tongue national slam finals.

8 Slam slots available – sign up by 7:20pm for your chance to qualify for the regional finals (and an opportunity to reach the nationals)
Standard £7 | Early Birds, Students & OAPs £5 | Slammers £3
Slammers are chosen at random from the sign-up list to perform – spoken word only, no music, no props. Each competitor has 3 minutes from the time they start talking on the mic. After 10 seconds’ grace period, they start losing points (1 point for every 10 seconds!). At the end, they’re given points out of 10 by 5 judges chosen from the audience, while the top and bottom scores are removed to ensure fairness. The slammer gets a score out of 30, and the competition moves on.
The winner of that evening’s competition goes through to the Regional Final (the Bristol one is in June), and the winner (and runner-up) of the Regional Final goes through to the National Final. The winner of the National Final gets crowned H&T National Slam Champion.
