Running Time
93 mins

An Oscar-nominated animation by The Secret of Kells co-director Nora Twomey, adapted from Deborah Ellis‘s bestseller and executive produced by Angelina Jolie.

It’s a coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of Taliban-dominated Kabul in 2001. When 11-year-old Pavana’s father is wrongfully arrested, the resourceful nipper cuts her hair and dresses as a boy in order to support her starving family. This is also partly a drama about the power of storytelling, as Pavana draws strength from the tales her father told her. You may be releived to learn that Twomey resists the temptation to lapse into simplistic right-on, uplifting feelgoodery, keeping one foot in reality and never losing sight of the fact that any victories under totalitarianism are small ones.

The Watershed’s screening is an International Day of Peace fundraiser for those affected by recent events in Afghanistan. there will also be a recorded intro from director Nora Twomey and other special guests.
