There is, apparently, a pseudo-scientific theory that the human blood-alcohol level is always too low. The way to improve health and happiness is to remain mildly pissed at all times. Naturally, this appeals to glum school history teacher Martin (Mads Mikkelsen) and his miserable, midlife crisis-afflicted colleagues Tommy (Thomas Bo Larsen), Peter (Lars Ranthe) and Nikolaj (Magnus Millang). Inspired in part by Winston Churchill, who beat the teetotal Hitler while permanently half-cut, they start furtively boozing from breakfast onwards, with predictable results for their relationships, health and, uh, bed linen.
If you need reminding that the slide from boozy bonhomie into alcoholism – especially among gloomy middle-aged men – is not a good look, Dogme 95 pioneer Thomas Vinterberg‘s latest film, which reunites him with The Hunt star Mads Mikkelsen, is very much the cautionary tale for you. Some critics have found it all rather obvious, but Mikkelsen is always supremely watchable.
