Not the one with George Clooney’s bottom, but the Russian original from 1972, which is almost twice as long. Adapted from the novel by Stanislaw Lem, Andrei Tarkovsky‘s version boasts the same story (astronaut travels to distant space station orbiting the eponymous planet to investigate a series of mysterious deaths), but stretches out with an awful lot more turgid philosophising.

It’s back on screen as part of the Watershed’s Lost in Space Sunday brunch season to complement the release of Claire Denis’s High Life.
