Ordinary, common-or-garden New York witch Kim Novak gets the hots for hunky publisher James Stewart, but then realises that he’s engaged to her high school nemesis. Naturally, she decides to use her powers to break them up, but this has unintended consequences. Reuniting the Vertigo team of Novak and Stewart, this is the film that inspired the Bewitched TV series. Watch out for Elsa Lanchester as Novak’s eccentric aunt and Jack Lemmon as her bongo-playing warlock brother. They are, however, all upstaged by Pyewacket the cat.
It’s back on screen at the Watershed to conclude the Reclaiming the Witch season.
